ABOUT

Ancient Greek Technology was to reach its apogee in Hellenistic times, with the development of all kinds of mechanical inventions and delicate scientific instruments such as the Antikythera Mechanism.

It is in this period that our subject belongs: we wish to show that every single mechanical component of a steam-powered force-pump was available in Ptolemaic Alexandria.

We have no indications, although it would have been very simple to achieve. And yet this “almost there” reflects the very high level that ancient Greek Technology reached in Hellenistic times. After all, the industrial revolution did not quite make it in Ptolemaic Alexandria, either.
